On thread 1930's Cine film of Newbury I explained how many bits and pieces of home film taken in 1930 by a H.T. Cadd of Newbury had come into my possession and I was collating them into a viewable DVD.

As an amateur I am pleased to say that the project is completed (a professional would not say that ) and I would be pleased to supply anyone who is interested with a copy (free of charge I hasten to add).

Bearing in mind some of the "goings on" that happen on the web I can understand that people are not keen to supply home details to some unknown stranger so I would like to call on any suggestions as to how this distribution could be achieved. It has been suggested U-Tube but the whole DVD is 1 hour and 5 minutes long and almost 4 gig. That is a bit big for uploading. Admittedly the parts that I can specifically contribute to Newbury (1935 Carnival Procession, Regatta on the river) could be uploaded to U-Tube but it is the DVD as a whole that is fascinating not just it's separate parts so I don't want to go cutting it apart.

Is there a Cine Club or Old Film Society of some sort in Newbury that would undertake to pass them on? Just somewhere neutral that people would not be wary of contacting and to whom I could send copies. Or some society that might even copy the DVD for others to be able to view. There is no copyright on on memories of the past. I leave it to any of you good people who are interested to help in this matter.

Dave Smith

A group of people are trying to re-open the old Didcot Newbury and Southampton railway on the basis that it would provide a new connection from the south to the midlands and northern England via a connection through Winchester and a susbequent connection to and through Basingstoke. It seems that although the Beeching cut was probably right at the time, now that we are looking for economies in distribution and reducing road transport and associated costs the rail route is looking more attractive.

http://dnsrr.angelfire.com/

Somehow, I doubt it will happen but you never know.

I am not only a new boy to Newbury Community but this is the first submission to any forum so please bear with me.
When the father of a friend died she found in the attic of his home a box containing many bits and pieces of old home movies. The name on the boxes of film is H.T.Cadd, Jack Hotel Newbury and also of Bear Hotel Hungerford. These pieces of film shot on a home cine camera show scenes and happenings of and around Newbury circa 1934 to 1937 as well as scenes from other parts of the country. I have had the film digitised and I am endeavouring to collate them into some sort of order that is viewable. Some of the sequences show scenes of the river (? I assume at Newbury,) a regatta on the river near to the G. Applegate Jnr boatyard, Newbury Carnival 1935, an open air Pageant with a cast of many depicting scenes of the Henry 8th Queen Elizabeth 1 era, and persons and efforts of the Newbury Amateur Dramatic Society. Much is partial, disjointed, and of varied quality, hence the need to fit together what one can to make something that is viewable. We will try our best and when it is completed I would be pleased to copy it off for anyone who may be interested.
Yesterday (Sat 14th) I searched for information regarding the Bear Hotel, Hungerford and Jack Hotel, Newbury. I was thrilled to find an article posted on newbury.net/forum giving the history of Jack Hotel. What was more exciting was finding that the proprietors of the time (circa 1932) were Mr & Mrs. H. A. Cadd. We have some film of what may be a father and son couple and I wonder if H.A Cadd was father and H.T. the son. Also there is a mature lady who features a great deal in the antics of The Newbury Amateur Dramatic Society. I wonder if she might be Mum, Mrs H. A. Cadd.
I e-mailed “administrator” of newbury.net/forum explaining what we had and Brian replied that a great many members are very knowledgeable regarding the history of Newbury and not only might be able to shed light on the Cadd family but may also be interested in the film itself.
Both Marilyn (the lady who found the films in her father’s attic) and I come from Yeovil and do not know Newbury at all. So, anything that would help to uncover the mystery of why these reels of film belonging to a person from Newbury came to be in an attic in Yeovil would be very much appreciated..
Dave Smith
