JACK OF "NEWBURY" never came from Newbury....he came TO Newbury...married his dead bosses widow and could not help but get richer by the day,as history tells us,he was in the new cloth trade[VODAFONE has similarities]    YES he probably would approve,as he changed the old place a bit, too!

Turns out it was Chrome - set to English (US).  It did give me one alternative - English (Australian)!  Eventually managed to get it to add English (UK) and all is well.

Well good afternoon USA,Brian and MG. I have spent the morning poking about.
I think Galley lane leading to Common lane in Headley is your best chance.
A place called "The Nuthach" is surrounded by trees, maybe a lime. #8 Common lane.

Less than a km is a smallholding with what looks like a wooden standing area for milk churns.
A dairy Farm?......The house would be less than 5 minutes from Greenham common.
Too late in those days.

I do remember descending Ashampstead hill sideways .(Brother was driving)
Because I have been pottering about I might have made some road name errors.
Good luck.

Thank you.  I've had some time to take a look at what you've found.

Just to recap what I know.  The letters that we've got, so far, are only addressed to the Limes, Newbury, Berkshire.  The letter from the woman living in the cottage was just Ridings (one d) Cottage.  Again, she says that the Limes house was renamed Gallentyne? (it's definitely one word, but not legible) when a new family moved in.  These homes would have housed British and American officers.

My mother mentioned at one point that the house may have also been called the Limes Headley.  Why?  I don't know.  She was very young at the time.  So, this memory might not be accurate and when I searched for that, I ended up at Headley Heath.

So, it seems like what you've found is in the right direction.  It was near a farm - possibly a dairy - and the cottage was a "neighbor".  Using Google Earth information and the land survey, around Riddings Lane, I wasn't able to find pictures of the "Darton House" if it's still there.

What do you think?  Could it be the Darton House that I'm looking for?  Or, something else.

Again, your help is appreciated, and I apologize for not responding earlier.

My apologies to all. No malice intended.

I had expected to receive an email when someone would reply but haven't.  Only now happened to think to check my posting out of curiosity.

I appreciate your help and will more thoroughly review your findings.

I wonder if it is the case that Reading Council run the town and here, WBC non elected staff run Newbury. If the latter is true then it makes the CEO bullet proof.

Possibly, but what the residents of Gordon Road haven't sussed is that at the moment they are sheilded from the Kings Road and Mill lane traffic noise. Stick a road through from SCATS and they will get the full value of the traffic noise in both directions.
I believe that the council have doubts about the value of that road proposal and probably don't have enough spare money to develop their bit now or in the future.

But doesn't the traffic plan for the racecourse development include it?

Regarding the height - I thought the new plans had seven storey blocks - ie the same as Parkway.  It seems that successive developments are gradually raising the bar - I'm afraid high rise Newbury is with us for good (10/12 storey on the racecourse).

As for the Sterling cables tower, I thought that the owners had an obligation to take down the corrugated iron bit at the top for safety reasons.

Wondered where you'd gone.

Don't you think WBC are acting unfairly by raising the parking charges in Newbury, but not Hungerford, Thatcham, Pangbourne, Theale?

Once again, it seems we're not all in this together after all.

If parking at privately run public car parks in Newbury costs more per space on average than the other towns you mention and you say "OFT rules on the public sector says that councils are bound by competition law" then they'd legally have to charge more in Newbury, wouldn't they?

Another cut has been WBC withdrawing IT support for school websites, which I hear is supposed to save £5k a year.

In other news....the school dinner contractor has been paid £19,000 by WBC not to sell sweets and fizzy drinks in the canteens.

As Comrade Garvie says...you couldn't make it up.

They may not be as high as the original proposal but the site would still have some very tall buildings.  But the biggest downside of the new plans is the loss of the relief road.

Here is a drawing from the planning application which shows how the height has changed dramatically.

http://planning.westberks.gov.uk/rpp/showimage.asp?j=11/02329/FULEXT&index=511100

As far as the Parkway tower goes, that tops out I believe above the dotted red line for the tower. So, no tower blocks on Sterling but a huge one on parkway.

................The Gordon Road resident believes that the value of his property will be devalued because of being overlooked. Well, lets not build anything because anywhere one builds there will be a matter of overlooking but the bonus point from his point of view is that the contamination will be cleared up and when a prospective purchaser for his property does a land search that will no longer be an issue for them. I wouldn't want to live near that sort of contamination.
................

Wasn't the land marked as industrial on the Town Plan?  Perhaps we should oblige this resident with an indusrial estate!

I have objections to some of the large estates (racecourse / Sandleford) on the basis that the infrastrucure roads / water is not able to cope, Smaller estates like this are acceptable.

If that was actually the case surely they'd have to put up parking charges to match Parkway.

Labour Party response to 2012 - 2013 Budget Posted by: Administrator

This is a press release from Newbury Labour Party, reproduced in full without editorial comment:

"Significant council borrowing and debt has led to deeper cuts" - That's the message from West Berkshire Labour spokesman Richard Garvie.

West Berkshire Labour Party have today given their response to a huge cuts package announced today by Conservative controlled West Berkshire District Council. Cuts of £8.9m will be made in the 2012/13 financial year if budget proposals are approved by Conservative and Lib Dem councillors at a meeting next Thursday, and Labour spokesman Richard Garvie is calling on members of the public to protest to their elected representatives before it's too late.

Speaking on the cuts package, Mr Garvie expressed his concern about the effect certain funding reductions will have on the vulnerable. "Cuts of £2m to the adult social care budget will greatly affect the most vulnerable in society who have already been hit by massive cuts over the past 18 months. Cuts to children centres, Connexions and a 10% reduction to the Youth Offending Team will hit young people and families. Over and above those cuts, the Conservative administration are also playing roulette with housing and commissioning, even to the point where they are reducing funding to facilities such as the women's refuge. What this Conservative administration is showing is that they are more concerned with running up tens of millions of pounds worth of debt by going on a property spending spree which has resulted in far deeper cuts to public services. I don't think anyone in West Berkshire will believe that is the right thing to do".

The Labour Party continue to argue that in times of austerity, West Berkshire District Council should be looking to reduce the amount of debt, not increase it by spending millions of pounds on property and other non essential spending. By increasing public debt by such a significant amount, the council must pay substantially higher debt interest payments which in turn results in a significant reduction of money in the general budget for essential items such as public services. The Conservative administration also rejected Labour proposals that West Berkshire District Council should share it's Chief Executive and the possibility of further savings created by working with other local authorities. The Conservative administration have also refused to look at a reduction in the number of elected members and political advisers, which could also save between £250,000 and £500,000 per year.
