I am finding user23 unbearable at the moment, on this forum and on Newbury Today. Just in the last few minutes he has chosen to contradict an accurate posting by Blackdog on the correct address for the Hogshead.

His thought processes seem contrary to all reasonable logic.

The thought process is:

WBC moved the taxi rank to the Wharf.

Now this was sensible for the day time as it gives full pedestrianisation to the Market Place. However they didn't really think of the evenings where it would be better to retain the Market Place rank as well, as the area will be open to vehicles anyway!

Therefore WBC have made a booboo and User has to discredit every little point people make. He then believes everyone will think WBC must have been correct all along!

I pointed out the difference between the postal address "Market Place" and the area known as the Market Place as there seem to be some confusion.

The Hogshead pub is quite clearly in the area known as the Market Place.

I think we both accepted we were being pedantic.

Yes and diverted the question why the council, illogically, moved the taxi rank from the Market Place?

Think I covered this one, above. The Hogshead is in the area known by most as The Market Place.

I'm guessing everyone being pedantic about this doesn't get out a lot in town.

None with "The Market Place" though.

So if you're being pedantic and sticking to postal addresses as some seem to be, "The Market Place" doesn't exist.

We all know in reality that's the favoured term to refer to the area in question though.

Should read "We all know at the WBC Office, for this argument, that's the favoured term to the area in question though"

Or as traditionally known the taxi rank in The Market Place.

There is logic here.
It is designed to disrupt any discussion that is against WBC. His main approach is to divert by picking on irrelevant points and then refuting them. If that doesn't work, he repeats the same thing again (it must be true if its said enough) or picks on another. When that doesn't work he stops any further discussion.
The trouble is that this approach is simply a response to others. He very seldom adds to the value of the discussion.
I would like to contribute more to these boards but I find User23 tiresome. I would be happier to post more if there was reasoned argument not simply point scoring from him.

That would just leave you to use the forum as a propaganda page for WBC. Extolling the virtues of the Supreme Leader every day would become boring.

Lets make User baiting an official Newbury sport?

Nope, if we're getting pedantic about postal addresses that's "20 Market Place" not "20 The Market Place".

"The Market Place" doesn't exist as a postal address in Newbury, as far as I know.

Guess where this came from.....

3.18 Taxis are not permitted to enter the pedestrianised zone although a number of taxi bays are provided in the Market Place, Wharf Street and Northbrook Street, all on the fringes of the zone and easily accessible to pedestrians.

When a debate descends into name calling, baiting or other such childish behaviour I usually leave it.

This thread is getting very close to that point.

I quite agree. The ridiculous situation yesterday with a Market Place address.

What he was quibbling about was "The". He was just nit picking over whether an address should be something like 30 Market Place or 30 THE Market Place.

At the end of the day, he was referring to the Hogshead, which is in Wharf Street anyway. What a Dick Head!

I'd say it ain't in the Market Place, it is off the Market Place.  The Wagon and Horses and the entrance to the Canal Bar are in the Market Place.

This is a great example of how to spectacularly misunderstand the point whilst being abusive at the same time.

I was quibbling and nit picking deliberately to show that a postal address doesn't always reflect what people refer to a place as, as in the case of those quibbling and nit picking about the location of the Hogshead.

So thanks, you're supporting what I've been saying with that post.

I suspect it is to make it easier to have alfresco evenings in the Market Place, without the risk from taxi drivers.

Come on User, you must admit that you really are the devil's advocate as far as both local forums are concerned.

Any mention of an action by WBC results in either you taking the exact opposite stance and if that doesn't cause all the sensitive posters to jump on their high horse then you go for the forum jugular by diverting the thread. You have got to be so good at it that it is now an expectation and your followers immediately jump in and so the thread drops down into such a ridiculous 'he said', 'I said' that everything gets more and more woolly. Your recent spate of determining the address of a Market Place pub takes the cake. Well done for that one, you must go to bed well satisfied.

I think WBC have handled the taxi rank problem very well and although there are no pubs in the Market Place, there might be one in the Wharf if the vision has its way.

But is there no normal traffic allowed through the Market Place after 17.00 anyway?
I fail to see how the taxi rank in front of the Queens and the Corn Exchange will affect the rest of the Market Place as there is a set back section in front of the Hatchet and the rest of the Market Place. How many alfresco people are we expecting? Was it not too expensive to set up tables etc for the local hostleries?

Yes, from Northbrook Street, but I was thinking of traffic from Wharf St.  No traffic here will benefit all the food and drink outlets along the top of Market Place and Wharf St, that want alfresco evenings.

But Wharf Street ceases to be 'pedestrian only' after 5.00 so that sort of defeats the objective. If they allow the boy racers down there from the Wharf then a few of our careful taxi drivers would be able to drive down onto the rank in The Market Place as well as driving through to go through the town which latter I guess they are still doing anyway. Perhaps the taxis cannot sit on the ex taxi rank but if they drive into the Market Place then I would have thought they could ply for hire as they go through. If they had one of their number outside the Corn Exchange with a walkie talkie, they could bring the taxis up one at a time. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it WBC.
