That's a bit extreme. I think Badger, Mistral, Kitchenmonger, Hinds, Camps and Laura Ashley will be the most worried about the new arrivals, and there will be a lot of chopping and changing of existing stores as retailers get to grips with the new footfall flows. The BID will not change that....the clue's in the title, it's there to augment the town centre.
As the BID is the latest example of Newbury doing what other towns do 10 years later, I think we have our new name folks.....
Take the old name....Newbury. Add what we're famous for...Vodafone....and we have NVTown....a town built on envy. (the council colour is green so we're halfway there with the branding).
In NVtown, it doesn't matter what you've got, it's all about who else we want to be like. In this way, we end up with £1 an hour parking ("in line with nearby towns" - WBC), expensive taxis ("in line with nearby towns"), and out of town businesses (retail parks/business parks). NVtown then....what do you think?
Carter, from West Berkshire Council, said the key to localism's success was for local communities to feel they could really make a difference. He said the Parkway shopping centre, which is due to open next month had brought a "new energy" to the town.
formerly known as the Supreme Leader (new title pending)
Must have missed the meeting where it was decided to dump Supreme Leader. If we must change how about Grand Panjandrum?
So far as I can tell 'localism' means giving local people a say in anything that doesn't actually matter very much and telling them if they want youth services, libraries, day care centres etc. they can bloody well run them themselves.

Thoughts?
Yes whodathoughtit. It's such good news that the Supreme Leader's getting national recognition. If anyone can defeat localism and people power....he's our man.
But wait. I hear that localism means something different in council circles. It means acquiring more powers from Whitehall, not handing power to the likes of you and me. A lot of the Bill actually thinks 'the local community' and the 'council' are one and the same.

That's like saying User and Richard Garvie are best mates?
