Good news...town centre businesses want to spend money marketing 'Brand Newbury'.

http://www.newburybid.com/projects.asp

I previously suggested Cartergrad (to honour the Supreme Leader), but this is stale now. And in any case, 'Change or Die' was the battlecry of the Vision 2025, so we need a new name for the Market Town Formerly Known As Newbury.

We've had one excellent suggestion to sell the naming rights to the highest corporate bidder. And silly ones related to prominent architects. But we all want what's best for the town, so time to get your thinking caps on.

Here's a quiz to get you going

1. What's Newbury famous for?
2. What's Newbury got that other towns want?
3. What's your favourite suffix for a town?

Then put the three words together and we might be getting somewhere near. Come on, there's a £375,000 marketing budget for the winning entry.

Is it just me, or is the bid basically going to pay for services that are already provided? (except the additional marketing?)

Not sure if a land train is a service already provided, I've not seen one.

Interesting to see marketing, maps and websites are priorities for local businesses when we've been told by some it's car parking and CCTV.

I'm enjoying the voting, it's almost as exciting as Eurovision.

I thought the CCTV requirement was the continuation of the service rather than the usual WBC f*** up of the transfer!

Something User23 of course tried to deny was happening in his usual brown nose way to the beloved leader!

Regarding the CCTV I may have to admit the council got it right this time - though not intentionally -  it will not be needed in the rest of the deserted town when Parkway opens. Just need a couple moved to Parkway. Why would the Bid want to produce a web site for the rest of the empty town - I suppose it could just show an empty page if it really must have one?

The BID won't need a web site and directory of shops produced as Parkway are doing their own so I am led to believe.

Surely this will only promote Parkway, not all businesses in the BID?

Well if Parkway succeeds then they will be the only ones left in business. The rest of the town, apart from a couple of small specialist independents, will not survive. Therefore the BID is rather pointless. Still people do like to grasp at straws when desperate?

That's a bit extreme. I think Badger, Mistral, Kitchenmonger, Hinds, Camps and Laura Ashley will be the most worried about the new arrivals, and there will be a lot of chopping and changing of existing stores as retailers get to grips with the new footfall flows. The BID will not change that....the clue's in the title, it's there to augment the town centre.

As the BID is the latest example of Newbury doing what other towns do 10 years later, I think we have our new name folks.....

Take the old name....Newbury. Add what we're famous for...Vodafone....and we have NVTown....a town built on envy. (the council colour is green so we're halfway there with the branding).

In NVtown, it doesn't matter what you've got, it's all about who else we want to be like. In this way, we end up with £1 an hour parking ("in line with nearby towns" - WBC), expensive taxis ("in line with nearby towns"), and out of town businesses (retail parks/business parks).

NVtown then....what do you think?
