It never ceases to amaze me, the calibre of the reporting on our local newspaper. Their grasp of the English language coupled with spelling gaffes is unbelievable.

This is taken from a recent article on their website:

"The seeds have been sewn for the idea of a community project, but have not yet beared fruit"

Indeed it is. While on the subject, the word you are using is more correctly spelled 'gaffe'. 'Gaff' has a number or meanings - see http://www.thefreedictionary.com/gaff.

No need. I would say that you are free to make spelling/grammar mistakes all you want. Probably not though if you are employed by a newspaper to write articles for publication. That's the difference.

The management of the NWN obviously disagree - mistakes in spelling and grammar are so commonplace that they obviously aren't bothered.

Would you think that the problem is with the spell chucker checker they are using. The spelling may be OK but the context for that wood word could be wring wrong

Doesn't he/she delete anything on this forum?

They did change one of the words, but still don't realise the difference between sewing and sowing.

Of course the answer might just they themselves aren't up to the job and simply don't know enough about the English language. Certainly not much of an advert though is it?

OK it seems that I have gaffed myself.

It was not my intention to criticise you but to make the point that correct spelling can often make a difference.

I have been a professional writer in the past, so I have a vested interest in good English. One of the more common errors that gets up my nose is the apparent inability of (presumably) well-educated people to differentiate between the correct use of  'lose' and 'loose'.

Reading this sentence leads me to think you have had better days.

Because there was interest in the posting I decided not to delete it (You do have the facility to delete/alter your own posting - ask user23)

One of the biggest mistakes that annoys me, both in speech and in written text is.

"It must of been" instead of "It must have been". But then I did have the privilege of a grammer skool edyoucation.

"It must of been" instead of "It must have been".

It's especially annoying when it's on your child's schoolwork and remains uncorrected by the English teacher..  I asked about this once at a parent's evening and got an equivalent answer of a casual shrug of the shoulders and "It don't matter none.... It's the way it's spoken these days innit...."...from the English teacher!!

My son STILL writes it like wot it's spoken...(he's 20!)
Must of gone to Kennet School I spose...

Probably OK for the b'day and xmas cards.
I doubt any literary rendition what he may have wrote, will stand the test of time.

My pet spelling hate is there and their. Not difficult is it.

Nor is text..if you send one!
I sent a text.....noun
I sent a letter....noun!
I rest my case...noun!

Oh..and here is another...
I am a rubbish dancer!
Rubbish is not an adjective..people use it
to describe things...wrong- rubbish is a noun as well.

You are all talking shit ('shit' is noun, 'talking shit' is a verb).  Who decides the correct way to execute our language?  Why does it change?  They are obviously not doing a good job.

Well, until I looked it up in the dictionary I would have agreed with you.

text verb /tekst/ [T]

Definition

to send someone a text message

I texted her to arrange a time to meet.

texting noun

/ˈtekst.ɪŋ/ [U]

Oddly enough, I was talking to a man last night who has a classic car and was at a show with it.

Someone from the NWN came up to report on his car and he asked her; "when are you going to get someone to check the spelling at the paper?"

She then walked off. They must have a Soviet approach to facing criticism.

NWN have previous for screwing up images. Here's another:

http://www.newburytoday.co.uk/News/Article.aspx?articleID=17608

If they're stuck for Thames Water logos, I'm sure a Google image search will help them out, rather than just enlarging (and therefore pixellating) a small image.
