What a strange thread. One political party using the website of an independent candidate to knock another party, and another political party moaning about the council.
'lacking worldly wisdom': I don't see why you should think it strange that an open forum that happens to be hosted by a candidate should have a thread like this, but then I shouldn't have thought it strange that you should post in the way that you did, either.

I'll word it in a way that perhaps you might understand. This is an open forum, but a forum that focuses on events and topics concerning the Newbury area. There is therefore, nothing strange that someone might create a thread based on alleged bad behaviour of a member for a local political party. The fact this forum also happens to be hosted by someone who is standing in the current local election as an independent is irrelevant (in my view). I think it therefore, naive of you to find this s strange phenomena.

Whatever his party Charlie, is right - you DO NOT need a card to vote, it just speeds things up.
The tellers have nothing to do with the ballot. They are members of political parties, taking polling numbers so that they can see who has turned out so they can focus on chasing those who haven't.

Why bring up candidates? No candidate was involved - unless you are suggesting that the offending teller was instructed to break the law in this way.
No one has the right to do anything that might prevent someone else from voting. In this case it was a party activist appointed by their party to sit outside the polling station and irritate voters (okay that is a personal response to tellers). That a teller, who has absolutley zero official status, should presume to go so far as to tell a prospective voter that they cannot go in and vote is dreadful behaviour and must surely be a breach of election law - I hope to hear that he/she is appearing in the magistrates court to receive a serious fine.
Back to tellers - I always refuse to give them my name or number, or let them see my voting card. I must admit it works better when I don't know any of the tellers, one year I found myself walking past my next door neighbour, my silence was pretty pointless on that occasion.
It's just a case of someone not knowing the rules, but as the council did not send anything to candidates and parties other than confirmation of nomination, what do they expect??? All of the potential breaches have been made by the two esisting parties too, which is even more surprising. It will all therefore be swept under the carpet to protect the council from potential embarrassment!!!
