I don't often go into town, but last night we popped in. In one pub, a round of a pint of bitter and half a pumped coke was £5.70. £2.40 for 1/2 coke! When I questioned why coke cost more than bitter I was told it doesn't. Your pint was £3.30. I pointed out the obvious that a pint of coke would be £4.80. No wonder people wanted Wetherspoons.

Spare thought for the poor souls that like to drink a few, or who go out more often!  To compound the issue, one pub notorious for its incredible tariffs, doesn't actually serve it with any more grace than one which is cheaper.  It does, however, have a nice view of the canal.

I think that's the one! Poor service and extortionate prices. After pouring my drinks the barperson said "£5.70". To which I replied "please".

There is one pub in Newbury that has the most disgusting toilets that I have ever seen in the UK. In fact I have seen cleaner toilets in third world countries.

Perhaps that is why I have heard Newbury described as the a**--hole of Britain?

I'm pretty sure we visited the pub you refer to. Absolutely vile.

So it's cheaper to drink alcohol than to have a soft drink? That doesn't bode well for those who are driving. Especially so considering that the pubs won't be paying much more than 10-20p for that coke. When pubs charge that kind of money, it's hard to have a great deal of symapthy for them when they complain about Wetherspoons.

My wife pointed out a possible reason for this. It is one of only two pubs in town (other than Wetherspoons) that allow children.

Lavatories?
A number of pubs have had shocking lavatories.  The Snooty Fox is quite often in a state that requires one to be pi$$ed to use them.  Conversely, the King Charles Tavern have been revamped and are currently in a good state.  The best one is the Diamond tap.

Drink price?
Lock Stock and Barrel are very expensive, but they are so popular in good weather, they couldn't give a stuff about what people think about their prices or staff politeness.

Those were the ones. Toilets - Snooty Fox, Prices & attitude - Lock, Stock. We went into the Hog's Head as well. Very rowdy and also to be avoided in future. I had an enjoyable early evening drink in Wetherspoons around Christmas time. I've no idea what it's like later though. But the staff were polite and beer very well priced. My friend was pleased because they had Tuborg.

Took my 2 kids to the Lock Stock & Barrel for a quick lunch on a Sunday.

2 (big) burgers, 1 (poor) sandwich and a few soft drinks came to over £40.

I have eaten there before in the evening and had a good meal, and it has a great location, but their prices put me off going too regularly.

Lock Stock do a great pint of Peroni, but it's quite expensive!!! I typically go to the G&P or the LSB. Failing that, jump on the bike or walk to the Blackbird in Bagnor.

Quite expensive?  How about 'a total rip off that only berks would consider paying that money for a pint of average lager in a flash glass'!

It's a nice pint actually Peroni, would wouldn't be my first choice though.

If you're looking for pubs with character try the Snooty, Canal Bar or KC.

You do get to keep the glass after though.

If there are children, it is Lock Stock, Wetherspoon's or Queen's.

I think it is utterly appropriate.  They musty be the same people who would spend £20.00 on a bottle of red.

Beware, if you have a child in a pushchair, it is the LSB's policy to banish you to the outside regardless of the weather..

I've seen 'Festival' toilets in better shape than the ones in the Snooty. Do they not come under any sort of 'Health and Hygiene' standards or 'Public Protection' laws?

Beck's Vier.  You don't get such a poncy glass, but you don't need to sell your house for it either.

How very New Labour of you. You'd rather quaff over-priced Italian lager than sup a pint of local ale. Mandelson would be delighted.

Out of Newbury ..... but the Spotted Dog at Cold Ash is good. It's been taken over recently and they have a seperate room for larger groups so you can hear yourself speak ! Very big portions of great food reasonable price (a little slow to arrive, but worth the wait).
