I don't often go into town, but last night we popped in. In one pub, a round of a pint of bitter and half a pumped coke was £5.70. £2.40 for 1/2 coke! When I questioned why coke cost more than bitter I was told it doesn't. Your pint was £3.30. I pointed out the obvious that a pint of coke would be £4.80. No wonder people wanted Wetherspoons.
Spare thought for the poor souls that like to drink a few, or who go out more often! To compound the issue, one pub notorious for its incredible tariffs, doesn't actually serve it with any more grace than one which is cheaper. It does, however, have a nice view of the canal.

I think that's the one! Poor service and extortionate prices. After pouring my drinks the barperson said "£5.70". To which I replied "please".
There is one pub in Newbury that has the most disgusting toilets that I have ever seen in the UK. In fact I have seen cleaner toilets in third world countries.

So it's cheaper to drink alcohol than to have a soft drink? That doesn't bode well for those who are driving. Especially so considering that the pubs won't be paying much more than 10-20p for that coke. When pubs charge that kind of money, it's hard to have a great deal of symapthy for them when they complain about Wetherspoons.

My wife pointed out a possible reason for this. It is one of only two pubs in town (other than Wetherspoons) that allow children.
Can I ask why we are not naming and shaming the pubs above ? ..... you would if it were a shop.
Lavatories? A number of pubs have had shocking lavatories. The Snooty Fox is quite often in a state that requires one to be pi$$ed to use them. Conversely, the King Charles Tavern have been revamped and are currently in a good state. The best one is the Diamond tap.
Drink price? Lock Stock and Barrel are very expensive, but they are so popular in good weather, they couldn't give a stuff about what people think about their prices or staff politeness.

Those were the ones. Toilets - Snooty Fox, Prices & attitude - Lock, Stock. We went into the Hog's Head as well. Very rowdy and also to be avoided in future. I had an enjoyable early evening drink in Wetherspoons around Christmas time. I've no idea what it's like later though. But the staff were polite and beer very well priced. My friend was pleased because they had Tuborg.
Lock Stock do a great pint of Peroni, but it's quite expensive!!! I typically go to the G&P or the LSB. Failing that, jump on the bike or walk to the Blackbird in Bagnor.
