It's a lot of money, but they are more impoverished than us. |

Lets not forget the millions we are paying back every day in interest on our National Debt and the poor old RAF kiddies we are having to sack to save a few bob! (by e mail)! |

I haven't forgot about that. I haven't forgotten about the elderly we neglect, while we spend money on things that I suspect are morally inferior as well. |

It is the 11th largest economy in the world. It is spending $31.5bn on its defence budget and $1.25bn on a space programme. India also has more millionaires than the UK. Hardly an impoverished country. |

They also have 1.15billion people who live there, compared to our 62million, that is over 18 times ours, so it is no-wonder they have more of a lot of things, which includes poverty. If they are spending so much on defence, perhaps it is in our best interests to keep them sweet. Does anyone know why we give £1b in aid? I bet it isn't because we are just nice like that. |

With neighbours like theirs, it's hardly surprising. |

It's 1.6 billion over four years which is a fair lump of cash but, it's pretty much a spratt to catch a mackeral as the saying goes. The main purpose of the financial aid is to hope to improve out trading with India. I believe India still has a friendly relationship with the UK and I would much sooner donate money to their economy rather than that of some of the African states where the finance goes to Swiss bank accounts and buys Mercedes motor cars for the chosen few.
The flip side of the coin is that India may refuse further aid from the UK in order to stand on their own feet as a world power. You never know, they may be sending aid to us in a few years time as we struggle to balance our own books. |

It's more or less a bribe - intended to ensure that our £4.7bn exports (2009) to India continue to grow as their economy expands. http://www.indiaonestop.com/tradepartners/uk/ukoverview.htmlIndia is deeply corrupt (87th out of 187 on Transparency International's corruption perception Index - we were 20th, Denmark was 1st - ie least corrupt) which means that those in power in India have a lot of influence over who gets what trade deals. This is the way the world works, I'm afraid. How much of Mubaraq's $50bn-$80bn personal fortune was 'donated' by British taxpayers, you may well be wondering. I'm sure our MP won't be happy to help with any Parliamentary questions aimed at getting answers to these interesting questions, but why not try asking him? Wittering on here won't make any difference at all. |

Fair point, but they spent 1.2B on a space programme - invasion from Mars? |

Space is where the big bucks are. They have the technology and probably the finances to get there. We gave up a long time ago when we scrapped blue streak. We do make a few satellites though so perhaps India might stick one up for us. |
