Newbury 2011 and beyond

A lone figure in Victoria Park

Trudging homeward before its dark

Developers have taken over our Market Town

Traditional shops are closing down

Victoria Park is Newbury’s open space

But now a big decision we must face

Do we need a pavilion at tremendous cost?

Or will this be another asset we have lost?

Please feel free to compose and add your own poem to this thread

My information indicates that this pavilion will be built no matter how well organised the protest. It is being deliberately kept very low key at the moment to extole the virtues of the Wharf project of which the pavilion is just "a bit on the side".

There are also plans to move WBC offices out of Newbury. Guess where they will be moving to?

I would be interested to know where that information came from. I suspect that WBC will do their best to drive the project on but I believe that they will have difficulty providing the financial business plan to support it for some years yet.

As far as your last question goes, anywhere that RG can't get at them will do.

Victoria Park

A pavilion planned for Victoria Park
So councillors can quaff wine and ogle the art.
Get rid of the swings we can’t have noise
No squealing children with their horrid little toys.
Peace and tranquility the order of the day
Take the tennis courts, bowls club and bandstand away.
No football pitch, that is far too low,
Not the right scene near a pavilion don’t you know?
Cut down the trees and tarmac over the space
Our cars need to park, a long walk we can’t face.
When it’s completed we will have a good lark
When we’ve developed Victoria Park?
No don’t ask questions it just has to be
We know exactly what is best for thee.
We really must have this pavilion in this place
On the last of Newbury’s green open space.

Ode to Vickie Park

Look at that space,
What nice big park,
Why don't we build something really big,
So we can use it when it's dark!

Ms Bale with great vigour confessed

She was tasked  an unusual request

A pavilion her mark

To find a great park

So Victoria’s now dispossessed

A un-used space,
All covered in snow,
Let's build somewhere great,
For people to go.

Take the same picture when it's a bit warmer and you will see a different story.

I would like to see you out there with your tennis kit on in that weather?

Wonder how many green spaces were being used at the same time? Not many? Lets build over them then?

Come on User do take your medicine there's a good chap?

With a huge pavilion blocking the view and the pond gone, then the same picture would not be possible.

Yes, the picture wouldn't be of a desolate wasted space, but a lively centre for the community, no matter what the weather.

Perhaps we should convert the canal into a motorway then - it will be much busier and will reduce the traffic jams

I wonder just how busy the rest of the town and town establishments were at that time and with that weather?

I bet the council office car park was pretty desolate at that time too? Perhaps we should build on that as well then eh?

I would never consider open green space in the middle of an urban environment a "desolate wasted space", but that's you 'townies' all over.  One of the uses of places like Vickie Park is that it isn't filled with people all the time.

In the summer, or in the snow,
Victoria Park, is a great place to go.
Sit and chat, run or play,
It's a place to go, night or day.
Graham Jones, if he gets his way,
Wants a new building, if Greenham will pay.
With the green space gone, it's anything but kind,
But the memories will remain, in our mind.

A rhetorical question but the only space we have in the centre of Newbury is Victoria Park and possibly Greenham Park. Marginally you might include Northcroft but the bit of ground at Shaw opposite the fire station could hardly be called a town centre park.
I'm not sure that the area opposite Shaw House has a name but historically it was the grounds of that House until cut into by the Western Avenue and the Shaw Estate. There was in the fifties, an entrance gate in the London Road about opposite St Mary's Road. Once again, it's not really a town centre park. So, there you have it, why should any person, councillor or employee of the public believe that they are entitled to ravish an area of Newbury which is for the open air pleasure of the public. Don't even get me started on the Parkway development. The council owe us for the approval of that extension at the Southern end so let them recompense us by not going ahead with their arrogant scheme for our park.

Don't go giving them ideas they may just go the whole hog and make Victoria Park in to just that; a massive car park as they are now short of parking spaces due to the latest changes? would also alleviate the cracking saga as well then?

Fibbing again.  Townies is a pejorative term for a certain type of town dweller.  Besides, I was born, lived and educated in Newbury; how about you?  Anyway, do you think Newbury has too much green space?

Looks like Newbury has twice it's quota then, thanks to our resident Chuckle Brothers.

Of course I'm not suggesting Newbury has too many green spaces.

It has more than one as has been incorrectly suggested by some though.

But only one Victoria Park in Central Newbury though? For the moment that is? All the other green spaces do not contain any playground, boating lake, bowls club, or bandstand. If the taxpayers are not allowed to keep any of these why should the council be allowed a wine quaffing pavilion?

Isn't it supposed to be an arts center? who attends arts centers? Yes a wine quaffing pavilion? Just a place for mainly councillors to have a good jolly don't you know? Leave the park for the ordinary people of Newbury? Just freshen the park up with a decent new cafe and some decent toilets? If you want a new arts center then build it where the Waterside is at the moment?

I'm afraid you haven't been following the WBC plan closely enough. The Waterside is reserved for luxury riverside apartments. No cheap housing there I'm afraid and certainly not an arts centre.
