Just as a matter of interest (possibly)...
It was 44 years ago Thursday(10/2/67) that my wife and I and our gang
of friends went to the Plaza in Newbury to see the late great Jimi Hendrix.
It cost 7/6d to get in, which is equivalent to 37p...My wife and I walked to the
Lemon Plaice behind him in the interval where he bought a bag of chips ..
no one took any notice..I managed to get a drum stick that Mitch Mitchell disgarded...
still have it somewhere in the loft...
If you are not in the slightest interested in this, and why should you be...then don't read it!

Being over 21 and part of the Swinging Sixties, I can impart the wealth of my Knowledge...

Ricky Tick used to organise events in the Windsor, Maidenhead area during th 1960's. Events were organised for all the pop stars of the sixties including Jimi Hendrix, Rolling Stones, Yardbirds, Georgie Fame, Geno Washingtonj etc.

The good old days!

Incidentally, Georgie Fame will be performing at one of the opening events for this years Newbury Spring Festival. http://newburyspringfestival.org.uk/jazz_georgie_fame.htm

Do you think Ricky Tick could have organised the JH Plaza gig?

Ricky Tick was not a person.

I don't think that Ricky Tick organised the Plaza event, but the Ricky Tick was well known amongst Newbury Teenagers at the time.

There were plenty of local gigs for local bands in those days, besides the Plaza, there was Hungerford Town Hall every Saturday night and the Plough at Shalbourne was famous for miles around (every Friday, Saturday and Sunday).

I only ask because I read a book about Hendrix and in the gig list it listed that he played at the Ricky Tick Club.  Now I know Hendrix played here and it might be an error, but I thought perhaps it was a promoter.

There were a lot of big names who gigged at Newbury in the sixties. Many of the sixties "pop stars" still appear at the Anvil and the Hexagon. Newbury no longer has a venue big enough to support the audience who would cover the cost.

We lost our opportunity for a purpose built theatre when the Lib Dems decided to spend millions to rescue the Corn Exchange.

One of the promoters of gigs at the Plaza was a chap called Johnny Angel-he actaully booked my group to play the matinee, Sunday afternoons for a month. I can still see the kids lining up at the stage gazing up at us whilst we played Shadows and Beatles numbers..They were in awe (probably full of drugs..no thats unfair they were only about 10-12)..We actually felt like 'pop' stars..
Those were the days....they don't build em like they used to!

Used to go to the Plaza and also the Plaza Grill as part of the evening after.

For your info Dick (sorry Dodgy) i also played in the Plaza and also at the CE when the Plaza closed.

Our group still play occasional work at 60s revival nights.

Not to much i must admit but we are still playing.

We had some great events when Ray Marsh ran many events in the Corn Exchange.

Nils Lofgren
Steve Howe
Bernie Marsden
Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas
Madness
Simply Red
UB40

Silks hosted: Bernie Tormé, Tigers of Pan Tang, The Enid, Brian Connolly's Sweet, Bad Manners

When was the Newbury Rock Festival in Northcroft? What was the bill?  I think BrainB has mentioned it before.

You would find a lot more if you went to the library to check out the "Whats on" pages of NWN for 1967 1968 and 1969.

P P Arnold and Chris Farlowe are 2 more that I can remember. Not forgetting our own local band Soul Reason.

The resident DJ was Frank Inglut.

Don't forget all of the Radio 1 DJ's who appeared at the Henwick (Hamiltons)

Crikey, i had forgot all about Soul Reason, which brings me on to the following question.
Who, apart from Ricky ( & some of the Gamblers ) are still playing !
