World Deli, Heathertons, Deli in the market place the + Markets we have, etc etc. You can't call for the support of local independants if you are not willing to support them yourselves.

Hethertons get my money six days a week, so don't even start. Didn't even know there was a Deli ! Are the market traders locals ?  Have you used "etc etc" because you can't actually think of anymore ???
A farm shop would be nice.

There is a farm market at least once a month. The World Deli opened at the eight bells arcade about 2 months ago.

Market traders now tend to not be local as they can't make a living relying on the support of the local population. Although we have a few still left in Newbury.

Just popped along to World Deli, as per your recommendation - and they have gone out of business within two months !

No local support! Mind you, rent was a bit steep....

Problem is you need to compete with Tesco & the rest who have rather well stocked 'World Food' aisles. Add online sellers able o provide fresh asian vegetable twice a week & you need to be doing something extra to survive. I think their lack of advertising & the part cafe layout wasn't the best of ideas.

How about The Empire Cafe in Cheap Street, probably the oldest independent bakery in Newbury.
( And for those not worried about their figure Wendy still makes the best Lardy Cakes ).

I was slightly put off by the South African flag drooping over the entrance.  The only food I associate with SA is Biltong.

Exactly.

Think we have already ascertained I use Hethertons every day, most of the market traders are not locals anyway, and world dehli has closed down. So the possibilities are pretty limited, From where I am sat, something for tea on a Saturday night from M&S would be a far more appealing option than Tesco, hence my post "yum".

Agreed.  A while back their produce was sometimes not quite up to scratch but I think the quality is now much better than that of the supermarkets.  If you haven't used them recently give them a try.
