Paving repair works to Newbury Town Centre

A programme of paving repair works is due to start next month in Newbury.  The work will take place between 8am to 6pm over three weekends as follows.

23rd & 24th October  - Full Closure

Sections within Bridge Street

Section within Mansion House Street

Sections within Market Place

30th & 31st October - Full Closure

Sections Bartholomew Street

Sections within Market Place

6th & 7th November - Full Closure

Section Bartholomew Street

David Betts, West Berkshire's Executive Member for Highways and Transport said, "The repairs are to small areas of paving that endure high vehicle stresses such braking and turning movements. The fact that such small areas need attention is testament to the general good condition of the paving in Newbury."

The cost of the work will be covered by the Council's existing maintenance budget.

There is an underlying problem with all of the paving in Newbury town centre. It is not designed for vehicular traffic, and will continue to deteriorate until Buses and large delivery lorries are banned from the town's cobbled area.

There is also a major problem when utility companies move in. They never bother to reinstate to the original standard. In consequence this hastens the deterioration. Cobbled pedestrian areas look very nice when they are first installed, but require regular maintenance which they don't get here in Newbury.

I would imagine that Councillor Betts doesn't come to Newbury very often, otherwise he needs to go to Specsavers.

I have been informed by Highways today, that the paving repairs are to the North of Bartholomew Street, within the pedestrian zone. So the steam has stopped coming from my ears !
