Hello Everyone,

My name is Anjelika, I live in Newbury.

At present I am trying to do some research on where my father worked in Newbury.

Information that I already have is:

My fathers name - William (Bill) Fuller

He had a boot and repair shop in Newbury, I believe is was called Joe Addy Boot and Shoe repair, possibly in Cheap Street or within that area.

Any information that anyone may have no matter how small will be of help to me.

Many thanks
    and
Kind Regards
Anj. xxxxx

There was a shoe repair shop (Cobblers) quite a number of years ago, in Cheap Street, but the name of the person, and the name of the shop I do not recognise, at all. It was a couple of doors away from the Newmarket Inn, where the cinema is now. He moved to Kings Road West at some stage, but has been long gone.

Any further details, for example how long ago, would help.

Hi Everyone,

Thank you so very much for your information.

I have found out today that the boot & shoe repair was called and the address is -

Joe Adey (Joseph)
67 Cheap Street
Newbury                            I believe this was first dated in 1942

In or around 1960              it had a name change to - Booker C shoe repair

1963 approx                     it was still at 67 Cheap Street

1965 approx                    moved to Station Road (The Coach)

I am still looking for any information and pitcures.

Dodgy - club foot is near, the cobbler had one leg longer than the other and wore a built up shoe.

Yes, I can't say I knew him but I remember him and the coach. The coach was actually a grounded body and stood by the side of the track on the Southern side of the station alongside the Didcot and Southampton branch platform where the railtrack compound is now, alongside the car park.

67 Cheap Street was where the opening/access to the ring road is now, which I believe was completed around 1963. I came to Newbury in April 1964 so too late to recall those premises.

He may well have been the same person that took over the cobblers shop further along cheap Street, and eventually moving to Kings Road west. He certainly had a club foot, or a short leg, with a built-up shoe. I think I recall he had a bit of a stutter too, and was quite a stocky man, about 5'6" - 5'8" - no taller.

Hello LocalRes,

Thank you for your reply.

Not sure that we are talking about the same person here. Due to my dad's disability of having one leg longer than the other he was no more than 5' tall if that. Not stocky at all, and with no stutter.

We may even be talking about 3 persons!! I knew both Chas Booker (his son-Melvyn-worked for me part time for a while) and the chap, sorry forgotten his name who had his cobblers shop in Kings Rd definitely had a stuttter and a deformed foot, It was not unkown to go to his shop and find it closed, he had gone to the races!

Old Codger,

I think you are right it does sound if three people are being talked about here.

I know my Dads shop was only closed on Wednesday afternoons (early closing day I believe). Going to the races was not something that he ever done.

Thank for all the input people.

Please keep it coming in, I am so interested.

My good lady worked in Lennards in Northbrook st around 1968 and remembers taking shoes for repair to West Mills to the gentleman who had a made up shoe, to compensate for his short leg.
She says she can always remember him wearing a long brown overall when working and nothing was to much trouble for him .
