Yes - but only from photos, it was gone before I moved into Newbury and I don't remember it from childhood visits (though I must surely have seen it given its location).

Admin is obviously playing one of his (her) little games with us. Are you not going to impart your local knowledge Blackdog?

Not yet - let some others have a go.

But I will help with a view of the other side of the building.

Isn't it the buildings that were on the wharf, approx where the public toilets & car park is now?

It looks like the entrance to a works. Would it be Plenty's in Cheap Street but I can't place the big wooden building in picture 2.

Is it the area now occupied by the library and the coach park? The large wooden building may be a part of a timber yard. Possibly Travis & Arnold.

After a lot of head scatching, I think I got it!!!!!

Was it called Wharf House?   It would have been knocked down to make way for the car park.

I do hope I am right and do I get a prize?

FE the dog. I think you may be right. If it is, I remember going there with my mum to pay our coal bill.

You are right Finlay. This was in the mid sixties.

There used to be a lot of buildings in the Wharf, that have long since been demolished.

In your final picture - showing all the parked cars - it's quite possible that it could even be my Vauxhall Viva, Registration number GJB 916C (purchased from Marchants the Vauxhall dealer - where now Burger King stands!) in the foreground.....
