The autumn season at the Corn Exchange and New Greenham Arts this year features a whole variety of performances including top quality theatre, striking dance, award-winning music, and fantastic family theatre including our annual pantomime, which this year is Sleeping Beauty. There is a treat in store for everyone this autumn.
The theatre programme this year provides a real treat for audiences, starting with the world premiere of a new piece by Out of Joint, who are one of the top touring theatre companies in the UK. The Big Fellah, written by Richard Bean and directed by Max Stafford-Clark, is the first event of the season on Thursday 2 – Saturday 4 September. Alongside The Big Fellah, Newbury welcomes the return of Filter with their riotous Twelfth Night on Tuesday 14 – Saturday 18 September. This was a huge success at the theatre in 2008 and the Corn Exchange is delighted to be welcoming back such a prestigious company for audiences who missed them the first time.
The dance event this season is from internationally renowned company, Candoco, on Thursday 18 November with their piece Renditions. Candoco are well known for their work as an integrated company featuring dancers with and without disabilities, as well as for producing some of the most cutting edge dance from world class choreographers.
The music offering this season ranges from award-winning folk with Spiers and Boden on Saturday 16 October to jazz and soul singer Jacqui Dankworth on Thursday 11 November to a Band’s Night on Friday 26 November, which is organised by the group of young people who ran Take Over the Corn Exchange! last April. The Corn Exchange are also delighted to be co-commissioning Perpetual Light with ArtsAgenda, a new choral requiem by Jessica Curry, which will be performed in Greenham Common Control Tower.
Families are not left out either with a brand new show from Bound2b Theatre The Night Time Whisperers on Thursday 28 October, also featuring a family puppet making workshop. There is also the loveable Elmer the Elephant on Saturday 20 November and the annual Christmas pantomime, Sleeping Beauty, for which tickets are already selling fast.
Laughs will come in all shapes and sizes this autumn as the Corn Exchange welcomes female comic Jenny Eclair with her show Old Dog, New Tricks. Following the popularity of Peter Clifford last season, another comedy magician, Pete Firman is coming to the Corn Exchange on Tuesday 19 October and no-nonsense silly comic, Alun Cochrane on Friday 5 November.
Lovers of the visual arts can once again enjoy the varied exhibition of Studio 8, the artists resident at New Greenham Arts, this September. Also this season the Corn Exchange is opening up its gallery to local and national artists in its second Open Submission Exhibition.
