I'm no expert, so I cannot contradict you.  I simply heard that English is a derivative of a Germanic one.  I think that Latin's influence is one of words and writing style, rather than as language protocol, but in truth, I don't know and this could be all cobblers.

Wikipedia has some stuff on this, but it makes little sense to me.
