That's the way ahead, with a referendum for any major issues....i.e. what the people want at the end of the day!

You really want to have to go to the polls every time the coalition set a new budget or try to get a new policy which may not be popular through parliament. I think not. We should have another immediate election, make sure the voters know that it is either Conservative or Labour and perhaps wipe that smug smile off the face of the losing, by a large margin, Lib Dem leader

How would you define a "major issue"?

How many people would understand the background or consequences?  Have you tried to read Maastricht Treaty for instance?

They do, however, have a different economy.

They also have less people although a large proportion of nuns.
They also have conscription
The Swiss Air Force also have flight ready aircraft on the ground but only on working days and during working hours.

Still no reason why we shouldn't copy.  Think your last comment is probably one of the real issues here - the cost of our 'defence forces' .  We simply haven't the resource to police the world any more.  Quite agree we should help - but to my mind, our contribution should simply match that of our European peers on an exactly equitable basis.  And the Swiss?  Think we can take it they are bright enough to havce worked out that should  a situation arise; they'd work weekends! That's simply good management; another thing we don't do.
