Dare I ask? I'm sure we'll get some caustic comments, but the Town Council are discussing streets names for the new Parkway development on Monday evening.

I've been thinking of either recognising the importance of the Kennet and Avon Canal (200 years celebration this year) or something linking John Winchcombe and his influential work in the area.

Comments gratefully received.

Ther aren't very many names that one can associate with the canal, John Gould of course and the engineer/designer of the Kennet and Avon, John Rennie. (1761 - 1821) who also designed London Bridge and many other notable waterways.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/historic_figures/rennie_john.shtml

The last two narrowboats to operate on the canal were Colin and Iris operated by John Gould until it became unnavigable in 1949/50.

Other than that you are stuck with Locks and basins or narrowboat way. Not very original I'm afraid.

Marsh Lane and Jack Street have been swallowed by Parkway - good names with historic links to old Newbury. Jack Street would also provide the link to Jack of Newbury (as another thread demonstrates we already have a Winchcombe Road).

Another possibility is to commemorate the Newbury Brewery Co that occupied a fair chunk of the Parkway site.

Oh dear. Do we really want a faux-nod from our destroyed past to grace this third-rate precinct?

We've had some good recent events to provide inspiration.

Baksheesh Square
Ourwayorno Way
Fourmillioncash Place
Smokenmirrors Street

As it was near where Queen Victoria shopped and stood proudly in figure form, why not
'Victoria Mall'...or not

You are too late!

Voila!

Victoria square...  ...complete with timber cladding, which appears to be a dominant feature of recent projects including the proposed pavillion, which I am assured will be built and there is nothing anyone can do to stop it.

Reminds me of the chalets at a Butlins Holiday Camp.

I thought Carters Folly had already been suggested. Is he not the architect of Vision 2025?
