Revellers will soon be dancing the night away in the Market Place as the former Late Lounge re-opens later this month.

In the latest boost for the town's nightlife, Newbury.net can reveal that the two-storey club above Le Petit Square will reopen as the Retro Bar on March 26.

The club offers 70s, 80s, and 90s dance and lots of cut-price drink promotions, according to new owners Fever Bars, who will also insist on an over-25 age only limit.

The venue closed its doors a year ago, after a short-lived rebrand as Secrets failed to attract drinkers, and an attempt at putting on lapdancers failed. Since then, several entrepreneurs have run the rule over the place, including the directors of Avenue in Sadlers Walk.

Previous incarnations go back a generation, with Charlies, Genesis, G's, and Late Lounge all gracing the space above the door. However, any new venture will have to cope with the smoking ban, and set up a space outside for guests wishing to smoke.

Earlier, we reported how the Hatchet and Snooty Fox were squaring up over outdoor drinking rights, with dozens of tables and chairs due to cover the Market Place in time for the World Cup in June.

Elsewhere in town, Retro is likely to face competition from Monty's, George and Pelican, and Purple Lounge, while Lloyds Bar is soon to take over Chicagos, and Hogshead is rumoured to be changing to Slug & Lettuce.

I'm assuming The Purple Lounge made a contribution to WBC cleaning to make up for the mess their leafleting people's cars made. There are leaflets in gutters all around Newbury. It seriously annoys me when people touch my Y reg last time round Fiesta.

Welcome, and it's good to see that as a responsible unit, you are doing your best to help eradicate the incidence of binge drinking.

Since it is illegal for you, or your staff, to serve anyone who is, or appears to be, drunk, you're not going to making too much profit. But that's up to you.

It did cross my mind to check your new club out....so thanks for the warning.

I suspect this will last a little longer than the previous club in those premises.

In what way is it not the same as before? Or, in other words different from what the venue has been since day one?

Why cant people give the new venue some space and see how it all works.
The problem with a few people is that they will not give a new venture a chance.

Seems to be a lot better planned with an music policy that isn't cobbled together on the back of a f** packet.

It's not really my thing but I'm sure it'll be popular with a lot of people.

The music is always 70's 80's 90's !!  Something different would be - Jazz, Reggae, D&B.........

The lap dancing was a last ditich attempt to get some ( desperate ) punters in.

I have no idea whether this will work, but I'm pleased to see investment in this at last. The rest were all local....ahem...entrepreneurs. The last one went bankrupt so some of what's posted above may be prophetic

You want the top end of town for that sort of stuff. The Monument's long running DnB night or the varied stuff they have in Avenue.
