Newbury Library to host long-awaited fantasy book launch http://www.westberks.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=19467What intrigues me is the following statement from the WBC website - Newbury Library was chosen by Pan Macmillan to host this event as the result of a successful bid by West Berkshire Council's Library Service.What bid? Are we actually paying the publisher for the right to advertise this book ? |

Bids don't necessarily have to involve money England are bidding to host the World Cup in 2018 for example. |

England's bid for the World Cup will involve £100 million plus - far more than this book launch I hope! The difference being that the World Cup bid team will be hoping to make a profit on their outlay. |

The winning bid isn't decided by who offers the most money. Sure the publicity machine around the bid has money spent on it but the actual decision is made solely on the strength of the bid, not who has spent the most. It's possible in theory for someone to spend nothing and beat someone who has spent millions. So you see, bids don't have to involve money. |

Without a very large amount of cash the World Cup bid will not be won - it might not be the only criteria but it sure as heel is one of them.
However, the subject was the bid made by the library to secure this book launch - did it involve payment of the publisher/author?
Or as I said in the first post -Are we actually paying the publisher for the right to advertise this book ? |

We may not have bid money, and it may be the facilities offered, but I hope they did not use my hard earned money on over priced consultants to put the bid together. |

So you see, bids don't have to involve money.
'theory spending nothing' is absurd, there must always be some cost involved even if it only the cost of a letter or phone call, how else would the recipient be aware of the bid? shouting perhaps? bit awkward if they were a few miles away. The report used the term bid in the usual journalistic sense but I think the library personell-who presumably initiated it-should be congratulated on achieving the successful outcome. |
