During what is becoming an increasingly rare visit to Newbury, I noticed that the excellent mural tracing the history of Newbury has been either covered over or replaced by three less-than-excellent adverts for the new cinema.
Why? And how can we get it restored? |

The Vue boards you see are part of their awareness campaign. They are placed in front of the murals, which remain intact and undamaged, and will be removed in the New Year. |

Was that inside Kennet shopping, if so I suspect that the cinema will have to take priority. A historical mural doesn't put bums on seats. I did walk through the new entrances last week and it's a bit of a white minimalist wasteland. Very modern and clean but could do with a bit of colour. Some lifesize movie stars for instance. Added later. Or a cardboard cut out of FF even. |

Perhaps no replacement for the real thing, but newbury.net has captured them for posterity and they can be viewed by clicking on the link below: http://www.newbury.net/forum/m-1248519642/ |

If you rarely visit Newbury what difference does it make to you what happens to them? I would have thought it was up to the people who own the Kennet Centre how they decorate it. You wouldn't go into Marks & Spencers and come away to discuss their decor would you? I wonder how many people have taken any notice of these murals. I think they are dull and wouldn't miss them if they weren't there, it's not as if they have any historic value. Paint them purple I say. |

I agree, they're incredibly clichéd. |

A piece of public art is not the same thing as the decor of a shop. The fact that I visit Newbury less often than in the past is irrelevant. As a long-term resident, elector and council tax payer of West Berkshire, Newbury is my natural centre for local administration, banking, transport, cinema, shopping, etc., and I have as much right to comment on what happens to the town as someone living within its boundaries. Since West Berkshire Council have been pursuing their policy of making the town unfriendly to shoppers who may be obliged to use their car, we have been shopping more in Lambourn and Hungerford. The former has a good Co-Op, a fantastic butcher, and a general store nearly as good as Barry Forkin's.

You are entitled to your opinion, of course, even if it does demonstrate that you are a schmuck! |

You'll have to explain the connection between the mural, your council tax and West Berkshire Council policies. I quite agree we are entitled to our opinions. It just isn't very good manners to call someone else names when they give an opinion differing to your own. |

Surely everything has historic value - perhaps low, perhaps high, but everything is history. The fact that someone missed them means they have value to that person. Personally I would far prefer them to a Vue advert or a purple wall. |

I totally agree with the above statement. Are the murals still in situ behind the Vue Posters? |

Does this answer your question, if anyone knows, it is she. |

Which will be removed, the boards or the murals? Your comment appears to indicate the latter. |

If you take out the bit between the commas, it reads accurately ..... They are placed in front of the murals and will be removed in the New Year. I see your point though |

What... Change history you mean? I've noticed there is little grey in your opinions. |
