West Berkshire Council's Teenage Pregnancy Team is running a sexual health roadshow to promote their recently launched C Card scheme. C Card offers young people free condoms and support and advice from trained professionals as well as free and simple screening and treatment for Chlamydia. The roadshow will visit Newbury Market Place, John O’Gaunt Youth Centre in Hungerford, Willink School in Burghfield and will stage themed events at a number of youth centres. Young people will be able to access information and advice as well as taking part in quiz’s and games with lots of giveaways to promote the message ‘Want respect? Use a condom’ and ‘Have fun, Be careful’.
Women aged 16-24 and men aged 20-34 are at the greatest risk of contracting Chlamydia for which the number of cases identified in the UK rose by 116% between 1999 and 2008 to 123,018.
Barbara Alexander, West Berkshire's Executive Councilor for Children & Young People said, " December and January is an exciting time of year for teenagers as there are lots of parties and opportunities to spend time with their friends. Unfortunately, it is also the time that the conception rate nationally for under 18's rises by around 8%."
She added, "The roadshow will arm young people with the knowledge they need to have fun and be careful."
Young people can sign up to C Card at a number of Youth Centres, the Connexions Centre and ‘The Zone’ drop-in sessions at secondary schools and Newbury College.
The roadshow will be in Newbury Market Place between 4pm and 6pm on Monday 7 December and Wednesday 9 December. |
