Then of course in 2006 (July) the market moved to Northbrook Street while the Market place was being converted to cobbles, trees and cafe culture...

Looking at those first two pictures in the thread... is it possible that those are the same market shoppers? |

The first picture was before the town was ringed with supermarkets. |

Mrs. Richards: ...and another thing. I asked for a room with a view. Basil Fawlty: [going to window, indicating] That is Torquay, ma'am. Mrs. Richards: That is not good enough. Basil Fawlty: Well, may I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? The Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeasts swinging majestically... Mrs. Richards: Don't be silly. I expect to be able to see the sea. Basil Fawlty: You can see the sea. It's over there, between the land and the sky. |

Didn't some old lady in an automatic car out of control drive through the window of the Co Op, the shop on the R.hand side of that last picture.
Is that the Red Rooster just to the left of the Co op behind the lamp post. |

Then tried to sue the Council for not putting up adequate signage warning her to stop? Threep. |

Yes, I think she stuck her foot down on the accelerator instead of the brake pedal |

Followed by endless posts about "Why are the Co-op smashing up people's cars" on the town notice board? |

She certainly did. It was a Rover 3500, she was elderly, and it was before this picture was taken, when the Co-op had large front windows, and the shop frontage was supported by cast iron round vertical columns, just inside the windows. She pinned someone to one of these poles, crushing her leg/s. the frontage was rebuilt as a result with the brick pillars to support the frontage, as seen in the picture. The grassed area just south of the Co-op, isn't that where Plenty's was demolished a few years previous, prior to the first stage of the Kennet Centre being built? The picture must be very late 70's, or even very early 80's. Pity you can't see which bank is two doors away from the Hatchet. It could have been Martin's Bank or William & Glynns, depending on the date of the photo. |

Could people *please*stop posting pictures of such excessive width that all other posting have to follow it, with the result that text goes off the screen, which was what happened to LocalRes's contribution earlier today?
anniejohn's peculiarly-coloured picture of the Market Place was 1725 pixels wide, which is ridiculous. Most computer monitors have a resolution of around 1024 to 1200 pixels in width, and I think that photos should comply with the former size.

The first parts of the Kennet Centre had already been built over the Plenty's site - the dreadful block south of the Catherine Wheel and the shoeshop is there in the picture. |
