Today in Northbrook Street and in market square (possibly other areas too), shoppers may have noticed a gentleman filming at either street level or from 1st/2nd floor windows. It transpires he has been contracted by the council to film 'a busy, vibrant market town' For what reasons it was not evident. Can't wait to see the results and how it is going to be used. More expenses to us rate payers!!

Can anyone remember the TV programme which featured a late 1940's black and white news reel of Newbury - then brought up to date with a late 1980's view. Hope we are able to see the new one - just for comparison. As for 'a busy, vibrant market town' - well, like it or not, it is.

Yes - it was! I know there was a reporter looking at a bike accident in Market Place. There was also a bit about the Council and shots of them in the Council chamber having a discussion.

"Pig & Paper Day" - But I can't remember a scene in the council chamber. Jack Hole was interviewed, presumably it was his mayoral year. The 1950s parts were filmed for the British Council - to show abroad as an example of an English country town, Updated for a feature programme by a local TV station in the 80s (Meridian?).
Anyone know where you can see this film? I would love to.
The museum used to have it on a loop - not much chance of that again for a year or three.
It was shown at the Newbury District Field Club's AGM in February. This month they are starting a season of evening meetings concentrating on local history, if enough people ask them to show it I'm sure it could be made to happen.
