Newbury's hinterland could soon be littered with 50ft tall wind turbines after the Government overruled local objections to give the controversial project the go-ahead.

The single 6kw turbine in East Ilsley was given planning permission by a government inspector last week, despite objections from the parish council, and an initial refusal by West Berkshire Council.

District planners were worried about setting a precedent in the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, but the inspector said that each application should be dealt with separately. The turbine will provide power to an office at Sunrise Hill Farm, where the inspector said telegraph poles and cables meant the turbine would not be an eyesore.

A flurry of similar applications are now more likely, especially along the Ridgeway, one of the few places where the wind is strong enough to generate energy.

That should read like the BT broadband speed...... Up to 6kw.  Most of the time, there won't be enough output to light a 100 watt bulb from Barry Forkins.

Yes!

I am so glad to hear it. I cannot stand all the duplicitous NIMBYS who protest against wind turbines and those zealots of the "Joan Pye Project" who moan about renewables (and distort the facts about them).

I want to see wind turbines from sea to shining sea across Britain so we can do what we need to to eliminate climate change, reopen the Vestas plant and cut our reliance on imported (and rip-off) energy.

Hooray!

There's already one almost this size at the top of Newbury Lane in Compton - 6kW is hardly on a par with Green Park is it ???

but probably sufficient to power a low energy one!

These things are meant to feed back into the grid to power everyone.

We're going to need a lot more though if irresponsible traders are still selling power hungry items such as 100w bulbs.

And councils insist on allowing pubs to stay open into the early hours of the morning and build extra shopping centres that sell goods that come from half way round the world.

Actually that may save energy, as otherwise the punters would be at home watchin the telly with the heating on

I happened across a programme called Bang Goes the Theory on TV the other day - seemed to be a sort of Tomorrow's World for kids. It had an item about a new invention - panels that could harvest power from the infrared spectrum. Apparently they can collect energy on a cloudy day, and even at night. The inventor said the panels were about 10 years away from production. If they worked as well as he claimed, I suppose wind turbines would be somewhat redundant.

Yes and who is going to take these useless things down then?

You know, I reckon that might just be offset by the fact that the energy crisis would be solved...
