The bollard repair man has been spending a lot of time in Newbury recently, as the incidence of bollard collisions appears to be on the increase. There have been at least three accidents involving the Bart Street bollards since September 1st. There have probably been others, but when it is a minor confrontation, the unfortunate motorist is able to pick up the shattered remains of his/her bumper put them in the boot and reverse sheepishly out.

Each time the bollard repair man comes to Newbury there is a fixed charge, thought to be in the region of £500 per visit plus parts. Not all of this is able to be reclaimed from insurance companies. Our photograph was taken last Friday (11th September) when the bollards were being repaired yet again.

West Berkshire Council will be making a number of improvements to the bollards over the next few weeks, including further eye level signage and changes to the road layout.

500 nicker! Per visit? They only have to come from Slough! One too many 0's perhaps?

You see that repair man there most weeks. Maybe they should think the whole thing again. With bollards one end and the other not in use is it worth it?

Maybe WBC should employ a bollard repair man & have him live in the centre of town, just in case someone damages the bollards

Good idea and to be even more productive he could double up as a parking warden.

How many more roadsigns will it take to stop these idiots driving onto the bollards? The approach to them are saturated with signs, you'd have to be blind to miss them.

And WHY are the full costs not being taken from the offenders insurance firms??? THEY SHOULD BE FROM NOW ON, NO EXCEPTIONS.

Arguably the same applies to smoking.

How many more f** packet warnings will it take to stop these idiots smoking? They are very very clear you'd have to be blind to miss them.

[b]And WHY are the full costs not being taken from the offenders when they are using the health services for related illnesses??? THEY SHOULD BE FROM NOW ON, NO EXCEPTIONS

Bollards are here...to stay...and we [WBC] are footing the bill for all this damage....how can that be?...Insurance companies would seek recompense if the bollards damaged a vehicle, somehow by misfunctioning,as quick as lightning....WHO IS NOT DOING THE THINKING AT WBC?

Perhaps we, WBC are, who knows but if they are then maybe they have in the back of their minds that they would have to fight the insurance companies and are not confident of winning.

I heard yet another half-wit drove onto the bollards today.

Anymore details or photos?

Why didn't we get the same bollards as at TRL. Theirs don't break every time someone farts within 100 metres.

As a whole wit, you've never made a mistake in your whole life then?

Keeping a scrapbook or something?  Not from around here, following a bus, noticed the signs just as impact occurred, hurt by airbag, car written off.

The man removed the menace of the chuggers and defeated Thames Water single handed and then went home for breakfast. How very dare you?

I wonder if anyone has (or tried to) sue WBC for the damage to their car.

If it is now considered that the signage is insufficient (which may be the case if WBC are altering and adding to the existing signs), whether this may open up the floodgates for those previously misfortuned by the barriers.

Remember, these people are potentially innocent IF it is deemed that they may not have seen the signs in time!

Think of a burglar (as the car driver), who is not potentially innocent by their actions, but if you (WBC) protect your property, YOU are potentially guilty of assault, or murder!!!

Murder?

It's a bit harsh to say they're deliberately setting out to kill people, isn't it?
