2010 is a landmark year in the life of the Kennet & Avon canal as we celebrate 200 years since completion of this important water route from Reading to Bristol. The Festival will have “2010 – a canal odyssey” as its theme. |

Fatal collision on the A34 Newbury Bypass. |

The A34 Newbury Bypass was closed earlier today (2nd July) following a collision between a pedestrian and a white Leyland Daf lorry. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. |

Poles paint Newbury pub purple. |

Enforcement officers from West Berkshire Council moved very swiftly to stop the new Polish tenants of the old Bricklayers pub in Bartholomew Street Newbury. They had started to paint the outside walls lilac. The pub is a grade II listed building. |

Teenage girl pushed in canal near Victoria Park, Newbury. |

Thames Valley Police is appealing for witnesses after a teenage girl was pushed into a canal in Newbury on Tuesday (17th November).
At around 5.20pm, a 16-year-old girl from Newbury was with friends in Victoria Park, close to the pond, when she was pushed into the Kennet and Avon canal. |

Chain used in vicious attack. |

The incident happened at about 10.40pm on Tuesday 10th November, in the alleyway between Courtlands Road and Greenham Road, Newbury.
An 18-year-old man was walking home along the alleyway when he was approached by two youths walking in the opposite direction. |

Newbury is undergoing major upheaval at the moment. Extensive roadworks are almost complete, the new Vue Cinema has opened in Market Street and the Parkway Shopping Centre is due to open for spring/summer 2011. |

Newbury's new seven screen multiplex has opened to capacity audiences. Over 1,000 people attended on Friday evening (13th November), bringing a much needed boost to the town's evening economy. |

Banner breaks loose in gale force winds. |

Part of Northbrook Street in Newbury had to be cordoned off earlier today when the advertising banner suspended across the street broke loose in gale force winds. The wire suspension cables were causing a serious hazard to passing pedestrians. |

Every seat in Newbury's new cinema is already taken for this evenings performances. This means at least an extra 1,000 people in town tonight mingling with the **** artists who normally frequent the town. |

Prolific burglar jailed for sixteen months. |
|
A 21-year old man has been jailed for 16 months after admitting four burglaries in West Berkshire. Michael Hankin, of no fixed abode, was sentenced earlier this week at Reading Crown Court. He admitted to 4 offences and asked for 25 other offences, including 12 burglaries to be taken into consideration |
